About me and my personal website/blog . . .

Me in '53

Me in ’53

I am Benney Davis, born in 1943, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and raised mostly in south Texas.  I served 4 years in the Air Force from 1960 to 64, and while it was the Vietnam War era, the closest I got to a war zone was being stationed in Montgomery, Alabama in 1963/64 while George Wallace was the Governor.

My education in the Air Force was electronics – Heavy Ground Radar Repairman – and I continued the trade of electronics after my discharge, off and on.  Along with road construction, commercial fisherman, newspaper distributor, custom picture framer, crew boat captain and a few other jobs here and there.  I am a mechanically inclined person.  My father was a carpenter, so the building trades are in my genes, I suppose.  I have done  my own work in most of the house building trades – carpentry, electrician, plumber, roofing, concrete work – whatever.  Also, I’m a fair shade-tree mechanic – from lawnmower/garden tractors to motorcycles, cars, trucks – both gas and diesel.  I’ve operated most moving equipment – from 18 wheelers to tracked dozers and loaders, worked on and ran boats of various sizes and went far enough in learning to fly to doing my solo long-range cross-country flight.

I’ve always been an outdoors type person.  When younger, I did a lot of hunting and fishing and now I’m enjoying trying to grow things in the the desert.  To balance all that, I’m a reader – always have been.  I’ve read 200+ books per year since my teens.  Fortunately my wife is the same way and our house has over 2,000 books in it; paperback and hard cover.  The Kindle has been a real pleasure in our lives and added another 1,000 plus books (eBooks) to each of us.

After moving from Texas to the Arizona desert in 1998, we took up the hobby of HTML/CSS – designing and building webpages and websites.  That lead me, in 2007, to learning about, and using, Apache Server, to make our website building much easier.  I’m still learning about Apache and have recently ventured into php as a real bonus to HTML/CSS.  I don’t know a lot about it yet, but I’m learning.

As to where this website/blog is going , I’m going to use it to reflect my interests. There’s already some some stuff here about how to install Apache Server on your personal computer.  I’d like to write more about installing and using WordPress.  I plan to expand the section about  learning and using HTML/CSS.  And also about my latest passion, Tournament Texas Hold’em – the tournaments and casinos we play, both in Laughlin, Nevada (25 minutes away) and in Las Vegas (a 2 hour drive from here).  And gardening in the desert.  Last year we actually ate some home grown tomatoes and a few jalapeno and cayenne peppers; this year not so much, so it’s pretty much been hit or miss, so far.

My goal is to make this website an eclectic mix of interesting and useful things to read.
